Full Description
{2} A large circular hut 12.2m in diameter, surrounded by a gully 0.9m wide with a break on the east for an entrance. Fragments of a 1st century flagon and rubble stone were found. The gully was open at the same time as the field boundary ditches so their use must have been linked.
An unusual feature of the hut was the elaborate flushing or water-supply arrangement. A small ditch ran across the width of the hut and through the entrance. On the side opposite the entrance it connected via a stone-lined culvert to a limestone platform which may have been the base for a water tank. Limeston blocks may have covered this conduit.
Five post holes were seen in the hut, presumably to house the upright timber roof supports. Loose stones were found which had formed the floor. The gully was relatively clean apart from rubble at the entrance butt-ends, which suggests that the entrance area was of part masonry construction. Two hearths were found in the hut.
