Monument record 1668/3/2 - Medieval/Post Medieval Boundary, Grafton Regis

A substantial bank aligned east to west. Possibly part of a walled enclosure described as the Warren.

{2} Immediately north of the northernmost pair of roads which leave the A508 to run towards the church is a substantial bank (marked (a) on the survey) up to 10m wide and in places 0.5m high. This stops some 40m short of the hedge against the main road and its general line is continued for 30m by a simple scarp which is probably nothing more than a headland. The bank itself shows as a light mark on the RAF verticals taken in 1947 and probably represents the northernmost wall of an enclosed warren marked here on a C17th or early C18th map of the parish.

{4} Hand-written note by G.Foard suggests possible use of the earthwork to defend Grafton House during the Civil War.
