Full Description

{2} Excavations were carried out from 1969 on a moat located on the south side of the village. The moat consisted of a shallow ditch completely surrounding an island, but this was only part of an area of earthworks recorded on aerial photographs taken prior to destruction. Excavation showed the ditch to be no more than 1m deep; this was deliberately filled in after the C17th.

{4} A roughly rectangular mound still standing in places to a height of 5ft completely surrounded by a moat with in places an outer bank. A section across the moat shows it to have been wide and shallow, with a maximum depth of 4ft. The fill is of one period and the moat was probably deliberately filled in at some time after the C17th, as is shown by the presence of clay tobacco pipe fragments on the original surface of the moat bank on the inside.
