Full Description

{1} Extending from the east front of hall was a third avenue which led across the site of the cleared village and over adjoining fields; it crossed a large pond which lay to the east of village and was landscaped to form an exactly circular pool, possibly in the 1740s. The pond now survives as distinct depression; work on the pool presumably coincided with The Arches at the east end of the avenue.

{3} Among other earthworks relating to the landscaping of the park is a large, exactly circular pond, 2m deep, lying in the entrace of a small valley (marked 'g' on the earthwork survey plan). On the maps of 1622 and 1728 there was another pond on this site, perhaps associated with the former village. Presumably the present pond was constructed sometime after 1728 but before 1740 as a feature to be viewed from the east front of the house. It is unlikely, but not impossible, that it dates from the 1740s.
