Summary

Sites of Roman buildings close to the parish boundary with Pilton on the upper slopes of the Lyveden valley on Boulder Clay at 250 ft above OD. A dense scatter of Roman pottery, including samian, is associated with at least five clearly defined areas of limestone rubble, all probably buildings. Interpreted as the possible site of a Roman villa.

Full Description

{1} Dark area with pebbles and limestone on a watershed. Almost circular area of stone surrounded by a dark ditch and a few other stone patches. Samian and colour-coated sherds.

NA Vol 10 p.162. Two new Roman sites were identified in 1974, including one at TL001863.

{3} Close to the parish boundary with Pilton on the upper slopes of the Lyveden Valley on Boulder Clay at 250 ft. above OD. A dense scatter of Roman pottery, including samian, is associated with at least five clearly defined areas of limestone rubble, all probably buildings. SP000863

{5} Clearly defined building scatter and Romano-British pottery including fragments of cheese presses and Antonine samian.

{9} TL 0009 8658 Four small sherds of RB pottery collected by Lyall, now in Westfield Museum, Kettering 1964.
