Summary

Possible site of an Iron Age settlement suggested by finds of Iron Age pottery of the 2nd and 1st centuries BC found on a cropmark of a small enclosure. The site has now been built over.

Full Description

{1} Salvage excavation and watching brief on site of school at TL035893. Iron Age features and pottery recovered.

{2} Salvage excavation and watching brief on site of school at TL035893. Iron Age features and pottery recovered. Recording was difficult due to wet conditions. Pottery was dated C1st/2nd BC.

{3} Iron Age settlement is now built over. Cropmarks were recorded in 1977 by Upex. An enclosure, possible pits and curving ditches. Further small enclosure?

{6} The east entrance was not found during levelling. The enclosure was probably occupied c.100 BC. There was probably a smaller enclosure and ditch modification at the south-west corner.
