Monument record 2830/0/7 - Medieval/Post Medieval Boundary

Cropmarks of 2 parallel ditches possibly the boundary of a medieval deer park.

{2} Fragments of the boundaries of the park can be picked up. There is a slight depression in the field at TL988032 [note incorrect ngr], which may be the corner of the park ditch.
In about 1339 two parts of the park at Kings Cliffe were enclosed by the tenants of Kings Cliffe, and the building of a stone wall 7ft high around 178acres of park is recorded in 1361. It was reckoned that only the park walls and the keepers lodge were maintaintyed up into the C15th. The keepership of the park was granted in 1517 to David Cecil, sergeant at arms, and Richard Cecil, page of the chamber. In Leland's day "Cliffe park was partly waullid with stone and partly palid".
