Type and Period (1)

Full Description

{1} An element of a middle Iron Age to late Iron Age settlement, although it was only this enclosure that had been visible on aerial photography.

{2} The three trenches in Enclosure Complex 2 confirm the findings of the geophysical survey which identified a large D-shaped enclosure, aligned alongside a possible ditched trackway to the north east. At least three periods of activity were identified, namely mid-late Iron Age, Romano British (1st -2nd centuries AD) and early-mid Saxon.

{3} Possible enclosure. NCCAP:SP7655/001.

{4} The D-shaped enclosure truncated the earlier rectangular enclosure. It was recut at least twice. The first recut, which destroyed much of the earliest ditch, was up to 3.80m wide and 1.40m deep with an entrance on the east side. It was later recut by a smaller ditch. Within the enclosure were two linear features which may have been internal divisions. A small cluster of pits was present in the northern part.
