Full Description

{2} Preliminary site works revealed quantities of post medieval material, suggesting that the quarried ground here had been used for the disposal of domestic refuse prior to landscaping for the C20th golf course. There were also a few artefacts of much earllier date. Large tracts of land immediately adjacent to the Kettering Road appeared not to have been quarried in fact, and more artefacts of prehistoric and Roman date prompted specific attention to this area.
The 'Hills and Hollows' within the site were unsurprisingly revealed to be spoil heaps, composed of numerous pieces of thin, angular fissile sandy limestone. There were limited finds of good quality cream-coloured limestone slabs amongst the upcast that would appear to represent the kind of material originally quarried.
