Monument record 5773/0/1 - Possible Prehistoric Barrow, south of Upton Lodge

Cropmarks of a double-ring ditch identified on aerial photographs during the Northants NMP. Subsequent archaeological evaluation only identified the inner ditch. There were no finds from the ditch fill.

{2} Trial trenching at Upton Lodge. The terminal end of a curvilinear ditch was identified in Trench 71. The ditch was 1m wide and continued beyond the limit of excavation. It was filled with a homogenous firm, light grey, clay silt. The ditch truncated a small feature, possibly a small pit or burrow with steep sides and tapering to a point at a depth of 0.4m. The ditch appears to correlate with a segmented curvilinear crop mark. An outer curvilinear feature also recorded as a crop mark was not present and may have been produced by variations in the natural geology. No dating evidence was recovered from these features.
