Full Description

{1} A D-shaped enclosure bounded by a low scarp 0.5m high. Traces of an outer ditch visible to the west. Overploughed with ridge and furrow. A possible second enclosure to the south.

{2} At SP581611. D-shaped enclosure bounded by a scarp 0.5m high and with traces of an outer ditch on the west side. Overploughed by ridge and furrow. Also the possibility of a second enclosure to the south. The enclosures appear to have been appended to the castle.

{3} Eleven trial trenches, placed to examine the area immediately north of a moat ditch which appeared to be one of the remants of the earlier medieval moated site. Conclusions were "as a result of this trial trenching it must be assumed that the remains of a medieval structure observed during the 19th century had been totally destroyed by quarrying. It may be possible that the foundations of a tower observed by Edgar, do survive somewhere in the south-east corner of the area. The very small areas of surviving medieval stratigraphy which may survive on the periphery of the quarried area would reveal very little of the former arrangements of the site during the medieval period."
