Summary

Field walking in 1972 over an area of circa 2 hectares to the north west of the village of Newton recovered a number of finds including early to mid Saxon potsherds and some iron slag. The soil in the fieldwalked area was notably dark in colour.

Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking; early middle Saxon pot sherds and iron slag were found; several acres were covered by the surface scatter. (SP 868845). Several pieces of Middle Saxon pottery and iron slag were found at this location and may relate to the cemetery at SP 873855.

{3} Anglo-Saxon settlement (SP 868845) lies NW of the village of Newton, on limestone at 99m above OD. During field-walking in 1972 an area of some 2 hectares of dark soil covered with iron slag and crude, hand-made early to mid Saxon pottery was recorded.

{5} At SP868845 was a dark occupation area. D Hall.

[SMR Note 16/11/2007: {6} appears to be wrongly attached, should be Newton and Little Oakley, not Brigstock. The latter is an Iron Age/Romano-British settlement site. No database records to double-check this against. Need to check with fieldworker.]
