Full Description

{1} Site identifed in the early 1960s and 1966 during ironstone extraction. Excavation in the 1960s revealed furnaces, pits, iron slag and charcoal of a possible Romano-British ironworking site. Also found was an iron spearhead. No good dating evidence was discovered for the ironworking. Also revealed were Romano-British pot sherds and a grey-ware pot vessel.

{5} (SP 937938). Possible RB site noted when excavating for iron ore several years prior to 1966, when RB sherds and "iron slag" were recovered. The finds were made by the father of Mr J L Wells, 34 Sarrington Road, Corby. Three sherds and a sample of the "iron slag" is in the Westfield Museum.

{6} The landowner Mr G T Conant has a broken RB greyware pot and an iron spearhead, also probably RB, from this site. Possibly associated with a similar site nearby at SP 93399340 but like that, destroyed by ironstone mining.
