Summary

Bedford and Northampton Branch Railway. Opened 10th June 1872, by the Midlands Railway, the Company opening new stations in Bedford at St John's Hospital and Guildhall Road. With its sharp curves and steep gradients it was ideal for operation by the experimental diesel railbuses from 1958. Closed to passengers 31st March 1962 and to goods in 1964. However the section from Hardingstone to Piddington ordnance Depot was retained and operated by the Army, although that has since closed.

Full Description

{1} Midland Railway, Northampton to Bedford line. Opened in 1885. Runs for c.13 miles within Northamptonshire.

{3} Bedford and Northampton Branch Railway. Opened 10th June 1872, by the Midlands Railway, the Company opening new stations in Bedford at St John's Hospital and Guildhall Road. With its sharp curves and steep gradients it was ideal for operation by the experimental diesel railbuses from 1958. Closed to passengers 31st March 1962 and to goods in 1964.
