Monument record 9889/0/2 - Open Fields Project: Areas of Survival of Ridge & Furrow

Earthworks of medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation identified on aerial photographs during the Open Fields Project.

{3} To the north north east of the village (SP 567412) there was formerly an unusual arrangement of ridge and furrow around the head of a broad west facing combe. Here the ridges radiated outwards up the slope in a fan-shaped pattern with the ridges narrowing from 7m wide at the top of the slope to under 3m near the valley bottom. In the same area rthere was evidence of overploughing of earlier headlands which produced long ridges of double reversed-S form.
