Monument record 5467/0/4 - Open Fields Project: Areas of Survival of Ridge & Furrow

Earthworks of medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation identfied on aerial photographs as part of the Open Fields Project. An assessment survey identified a potentially earlier field system underyling the ridge and furrow.

{3} An assessment of the earthworks was undertaken. The ridge and furrow earthworks are clearly visible in the centre of the field, but become less clear towards the edges of the field. A walkover survey indicated that the ridges were up to 6m wide and 0.5m high; the furrows were up to 2m wide and 0.25m deep. The pond post-dates the 1952 OS map.
Lidar imagery appears to show an earlier field system underlying the open field of which the ridge and furrow earthworks are part. Part of the earlier field system boundary has been incoporated into the open field as a furlong boundary. In other areas it appears to underlie the ridge and furrow of the open field. The earlier system may be part of an earlier settlement, perhaps a Romano-British farmstead.
