Full Description
{1} A section was excavated in June 1958, approximately 10 yards from the point where the road leaves South Wood towards Stanion (NG/SP 898874) - (incorrect grid ref.). The section showed that the road was 21 feet wide 1' 10'' deep at the thickest point, and was cambered with a small ditch on either side. The core of the road was ironstone shale, above which was a layer of mixed limestone and soil, with larger pieces of limestone prepomderating near the surface. These larger pieses were irregularly shaped, but in general, were about 2 inches thick and up to 9 inches wide. There were only slight traces of gravel on the surface.
One find was made, a bronze stud just over 1/2 inch long, which has been confirmed as Roman date and was probably used on harness or similar equipment. It was found on the surface of the road immediately below the humus.
