Full Description

(1) Two fragmentary small gully’s approximately 1.60m apart and traced over a length of c8m. Each was c0.40m wide with a fill of dirty grey silt clay with light grey clay mottles and containing frequent pebbles and pea grit. Possible wheel track ruts or cultivation furrows?
Within the c0.30m depth of groundworks, no clearly pre-modern deposits were revealed and no artefacts recovered that might be associated with the battle of Northampton. It is concluded that the horizons investigated are largely, if not solely the product of modern activity, most likely resulting from a combination of ground works associated with canalisation of the river, flood protection and road and rail construction.
