Full Description
{1} Spread of dark grey silt clay directly under the turf apart from to the south where it appeared to underlay an orange silt clay with moderate gravel pebbles. Contains 19th and 20th century brick, glass and coal fragments with pea gravel patches. Very occasional small limestone fragments and a 19th century stoneware bottle fragment. River dredgings.
Within the c0.30m depth of groundworks, no clearly pre-modern deposits were revealed and no artefacts recovered that might be associated with the battle of Northampton. It is concluded that the horizons investigated are largely, if not solely the product of modern activity, most likely resulting from a combination of ground works associated with canalisation of the river, flood protection and road and rail construction.
