Full Description

{1} Scatter of Roman material in field at TL035724. Includes sherds and a coin.

{2} A concentration of early and middle Roman pottery was recovered from the same area as the dense Iron Age concentration to the west of the enclosures, but the absence of later pottery suggests that activity ceased by the end of the third century when the settlement may have shifted eastwards. Dense concentrations of Roman pottery were found within the large enclosures with up to 63 sherds per stint. The pottery represents a wide range of fabrics, but with an emphasis towards the late Roman period. The principal focus of activity appears to be in the centre and south of the main enclosure with less pottery at the margins. A further concentration of late Roman material is present at the east and could denote further settlement shift.
The extent of both cropmarks and pottery scatters suggests the remains of a substantial settlement which, at least throughout the Roman period, is likely to have acted as a focus for the local clayland farms. The large quantity of late Roman material suggests a continuing high level of activity, possibly with expansion at a time when some of the smaller farms were abandoned or were operating at a reduced scale. The absence of early middle Saxon pottery suggests that any importance which the settlement had during the Roman period did not continue.
