Full Description

{1} c.1875 boot and shoe factory. A 3-storey boot and shoe factory, built to an L-plan on a tapering site, with the 8-bay main range fronting Lorne Road to the south and a narrow 4-bay rear range extending northwards from the east end to Louise Road, enclosing a small yard. It is constructed of orange brick with segmental arches to the openings. The front elevation has arches and abutments in buff brick, flush blue-brick impost bands carried up over the arches, a chamfered and cogged eaves, also mixing blue and buff bricks, and elaborate limestone kneelers to the gables. The rear elevation is uniformly in orange brick and has a dentilled and cogged eaves. The original entrance was at the east end of the front elevation, beneath a second-storey taking-in doorway, now converted into a window, a second entrance to the west is a later insertion. All the fenestration has been renewed. There is a small stack on the east gable, north of the ridge, and a larger ridge-mounted stack on the west gable. The rear range appears to be contemporary, but incorporates large modern windows in the north gable. A modern flue agains the north west corner appears to replace a brick stack in this position. The adjoining lean-to partly overlies a former yard entrance; it appears on the 1899 OS, but has been modernised extensively. Other small buildings in the yard have been demolished. The interior of the original building has cast-iron columns supporting an axial beam on each floor.
