Monument record 1160/425/1 - 20 St Michael's Road

Late 19th century boot and shoe factory: Chapman Brothers & Jays, Boot Manufacturers (Formerly Frederick Wheeler). Historically 18 St Michaels Road. Now demolished

{1} Two-storey, four-bay building on the south side of St Michaels Road. The earliest range is represented by the two bays to the east, which the 1882 OS map shows extended to the rear with an enclosed yard on its west side. The western two bays were added before 1899. Behind it, and also present by 1899, a long range, consisting of a single storey over a basement, extended the length of the former yard.
