Full Description

{3} A burial ground was established adjacent to the chapel by 1878. It occupies a plot of land, which was a north-south strip on the eastern side of the chapel. This is now grassed over, and a tarmac path runs through the northern area, with trees around the perimeter. There were no grave markers within the space. Former patients were laid to rest here as early as 1878, including children, which was recorded to have upset the nursing staff. It is also said that 3,000 Canadian casualities of WWI who died at the hospital between 1916 and 1919 were buried here, but no memorial was present and no written records attest this.

{4} Cemetery shown, possibly with small building in the south-west corner of enclosed area.

{5} Cemetery shown on 1950s mapping. The cemetery appears to have been extended southwards to occupy a block of land directly east of the chapel by this time, or shortly afterwards.
