Please read our .

Summary

Dismantled railway. The Newark and Market Harborough Railway was built as a Great Northern and London and North Western Railways Joint Line to link the Midlands ore fields and agricultural production with the North. It utilised the Newark and Marefield Line, authorised in 1872 as a locally promoted scheme, and got further authorisation to extend that scheme to Welham Junction to link it with Market Harborough. The line opened in 1879. A branch line to Leicester (Linear 992) was authorised in 1883. Sevices to Peterborough, opened in 1883 via the Medbourne and Fletton Curves, ceased in 1916, and increased competition forced total closure in 1953. As with the Syston and Peterborough Railway, (Linear 990), the line was popular with fox hunters.
