Full Description

{1} Stanley L. Hunt Printers on corner of Station Road. Film 2 photo 14.

[2} Though labelled misleadingly as a boot and shoe factory on the 1923 OS map, it is identified as the BUSMC's Rushden Depot by an illustration which appears in the company history, and by stylistic similarities with the same company's roughly contemporary Depot in School Lane, Kettering.

This British United Shoe Machinery Company depot and warehouse is a substantial building on the north side of Midland Road at its junction with Station Road, and dates from 1910. It is located close to its principle customers, a series of shoe factories.

It comprises a two-storeyed range (consisting of first floor offices over ground floor manufacturing space, and incorporating a small basement area) and a single storeyed factory to the rear. The office range has a five-bay south front, the end bays of which project beneath pediments. The walls have an orange facing brick on a blue brick base, and rise to a moulded cornice. The detailing is generally in limestone ashlar. There is a large and partially infilled works entrance in the westernmost bay, with bull nosed blue brick jambs beneath moulded stone quoins and a moulded lintle. The principal entrance occupies the next bay to the east

The works was extended to the north by the addition of a single gabled range at a later date (before 1978). The addition is plainer and has a corrugated asbestos roof. There are also minor additions along the western side of the factory.
