Summary

The site of a leather factory built between 1923 and 1929. The long narrow single-storey building extended from Station Road on the north almost to Duck Street on the south, with about half its length having a frontage to Carnegie Street on the west. It appears to have been built originally as a leather factory. In 1937 to 1975 it was used as a shoe factory, labelled as such on OS maps during the 1970s. However it seems more likely that it was used as a warehouse. By 2010 the building had been demolished.

Full Description

{1} A long, narrow single-storey building extending from Station Road to the north, almost to Duck Street on the south. The original factory building probably comprised the Fletton brick section, roofed in asbestos, and fronting Carnegie Road to the west. Around 1930 the range appears to have been extended to a rendered brick frontage, partly two-storeyed and louvred, on Station Road.
May have been built originally as a leather factor's. Possibly used as a warehouse latterly. In 1929 recorded as ?J Joyce, leather factor, of Carnegie Street, and the same in 1937. Marked as a boot and shoe factory on later OS mapping, but by the time of survey possibly used a a warehouse by Toetectors Ltd.

{2} Building demolished by 2010.
