Full Description

{1}Probably founded in 1237 & continued in use until at least 1378; not necessarily on site of manor; also known as Chapel of Blessed Virgin on the Grene; would suggest that sited on or adjacent to a green; one main green in Braybrooke in C18th near Easthall Manor; no reference to burial rights so identification of site difficult;

{2} [Marginal] Besides the parish church there was in Braybroke a chapel, called the chapel of West-hall, or of the Blessed Virgin on the Grene {5}. In this chapel was a chantry founded by Peter de Rale in the time of Robert Grosthead, bishop of Lincoln.
The same "chapel or chauntry, called the Westhalse, of the hospitallers of S. John of Jerusalem" is mentioned in an inquisition taken in the 35th of Edward III [1362.] A list of institutions to the chapel, from 1310 to 1378 is in the registers of the bishops of Lincoln.

{4} In 1237 Robert, Bishop of Lincoln, (1235-1254), granted that Peter de Raley might have a chapel in his own ground at Braybroc and a chantry therein for himself and his household excluding other parishioners (Copy of deed in church chest).

{6} The site of the chapel and hall was not determined.
