Summary

Church built in 1852 with 1904 additions and demolished in the 1970s. The churchyard and surrounding walls still survive and are locally listed.

Full Description

{12} This note concerns the Victorian church and churchyard of St Edmunds, Northampton, located on Wellingborough Road (NGR approx centre SP7643 6089). The church was demolished in late 1970's though its churchyard with some gravestones survives today. Photo taken a year or two prior to demolition.

{13} From St Giles' parish, which extended east of the old walls, was formed in 1846 St Edmund's parish, the church of which, consecrated in 1852. Was built from the plans by Mr Matthew Holding and enlarged in 1891.

{14} St Edmund, Wellingborough Road. 1850 by J W Hugal of Cheltenham. The North aisle by Matthew Holding. Of ironstone with a crossing tower and lancet windows. The finest motif is Holding's cross gabled clerestory, each bay with a group of three steeped lancets. The interior is less rewarding. Lavish circular piers, stencilled walls. Steep roof on steep arched braces. - STAINED GLASS. Chancel E, with big figures, by Hardman, 1850-2.

{15} The churchyard walls have been proposed as a candidate for local listing.
