Monument record 6508/1 - Possible Iron Age/Roman enclosure, west of Towcester Road

Cropmarks of a rectilinear enclosure identified from aerial photographs. A geophysical survey undertaken in 2016 indicated that there were in fact two adjacent enclosures. Subsequent trial trench excavation in 2017 identified an undated gully that may be the western arm of the west enclosure, but no evidence for the eastern enclosure

{3} Archaeological trial trench excavation undertaken in 2017. A gully identified at the north end of Field 17 appears to be the west side of the western rectangular enclosure found in Geophysical survey Site GS15. However, the evaluation did not find the ditch of the eastern enclosure. This suggests that some of what is shown in the geophysics are traces of remains in the subsoil, which cannot be verified archaeologically. No pottery evidence was recovered, but adjacent sites date to the Roman period.
