Full Description

{1} Archaeological fieldwork survey was undertaken. Brampton tithe map shows only the western side of the wood called the 'lawn'. This name, given to pasture spaces lying within woodland, suggests that the Hermitage block of land to the west was once woodland, linking up with the extant Hermitage Wood.
At the south-east the exterior of the wood has a bank 4.5m wide. Most of the remainder is bounded by a ditch with only a slight internal bank, 8m wide in all. The north-west is called Stoke Wood Quarter, and forms part of a nature reserve. It has a fairly large bank at the north, until the boundary becomes a slade (brook). On the west of the wood, the boundary is primarily a ditch set back several metres from the hedge.
