Full Description
{1} 1086 Domesday Survey records at Newtone, one mill rendering 16d (an naimal mill?) and another rendering 7s 8d held by Lanzelieu of the Countess Judith.
1263 Reference to a watermill at Newton.
1847-81 Walpole family were millers here.
1906 Last directory entry for this mill.
1928 Mill derelict.
c1935 Mill demolished.
A long embanked leat approaches the site from the west. Near the mill site it is crossed by a bridge carrying the bridle way, heading south from that proceeding Newton hamlet. East of the bridge there are indications of a mill-pond, ending at a low stone wall, now supporting corrugated iron sheds for the farm. The stone wall was probably part of the mill and if so, it seems to be the only remaining above ground evidence of the mill here.
The mill-house, which survives as the Mill Farm House, was separate from the mill.
