Summary

Site of St Andrews Mill [also known as Lower Mill, Kingsthorpe South Mill]. Documented since at least the 15th century. The latest mill building was badly damaged by fire during WWII and was pulled down after the war.

Full Description

{1} St Andrew's Mill & leat situated to north-west of St Andrew's Priory & outside precinct wall;
{2}St Andrew's Mill noted;
{3} St Andrew's Mill shown;
{4}[Kingsthorpe] South Mill or St Andrew's Mill stands in extreme south-west corner of parish on low ground & close to site of ancient priory of St Andrew's;
{5}St Andrew's Mill stood to north-west of town & was held by St Andrew's Priory;
{6}Originally leased to St Andrew's priory Kingsthorpe South Mill was one of largest in town; in 1457 South Mills were let to miller William Braunfield at annual rent of 7 marks set for 10 years; in 1529 South "Corne Mills" let to widow Agnes Hayward & Ambrose Walker & his wife; previously occupied by William Prentice of Northampton; annual rent set at 8 marks for 21 years; during reign of Elizabeth I mill valued at 49s.2d; mill known to have been working until 1940s when badly damaged by fire; was demolished shortly afterwards; no remains visible; fieldname: Millers Meadow;
{7} There appears to be no above ground remains of the mill buildings. However, no major buildings have been erected on the site and excavation might reveal something related to the 15th century four watermills.
