Full Description

{3} Grass covered cutting approx 30ft deep at bridge carrying Station Road, c.1941. Serviced ironstone quarry.

{4} Now a Pocket Park, formerly the quarries for Richard Thomas and Co worked between 1936 and 1960. Bridge parapets remain where standard gauge tramway tunnelled beneath road. To the west, the line of the tramway can easily be seen. This transported iron ore from quarries east of the road down to Wellingborough furnaces. To the east, the Pocket Park follows the ironstone gullets for half a mile with remains including wooden and concrete sleepers. At the south-east end of the quarry was the entrance to the tunnel (now bricked up) which carried a narrow gauge tramway to transport ore under Finedon Hill to the processing plant at Irthlingborough, some 2 miles away. This operated from 1939 till about 1945.
