Monument record 8459/2/1 - Ironstone Quarrying (Cranford Ironstone Co.)

Late 19th century quarry pits

{1} Owners from 1875 Cranford Ironstone Co, (This company was jointly owned by Staverley Iron & Coal Co.Ltd and Tredegar Iron Co.Ltd. And James Oakes Ltd.) with a lease of 20 years; from 29th September 1908 Clay Cross Co.Ltd.; from 1959 Cranford Ironstone Co.Ltd., until closure a short time later. The workings for these quarries lay north and south of the Cranford to Kettering road and to the west of the village. It is possible that early workings were on cable worked line on the dead section with quarry branches worked by horses or locomotives. Working were closed from about 1898 and lay inert for about 10 years when acquired by Clay Cross a mining company. Mining commencing in 1909 south of the railway until 1913 when they were exhausted. A second mine was commenced in 1913 but ceased in 1926 at the time of the General Strike and the site officially closed on 17th November 1928. In 1959 the site was leased to Cranford Ironstone Co.Ltd., and the quarries were again worked but only for a short time.
