Building record 3884/65/1 - Elsden Works, Mill Road

This leather factory was built in 1912 for L.Lilley and Company on the corner of Mill Road and Elsden Road. In the 1920s it was extended by the addition of a north-lit range on the west side of the works. The factory was taken over by the Norvic Shoe Company in the 1950s.

{1} The 1912 factory consisted of 2 storeys and had six bays facing Elsden Road to the east and a gabled front to Mill Road on the north. It is of orange brick on a darker brick base. Before 1924 a single storey norht-lit range extended the Mill Road frontage westwards and after 1924 a two-storeyed range was added in the re-entrant created by the north-lit range.

{1} 'Elsden Works Boot and Shoe', Elsden Street / Mill Road. Elsden Works factory on corner of Elsden Street and Mill Road. Now owned by 'Gandolfi Group' and would appear to be being used as storage. Film 10, photo 26.

{2} The Elsden Works was built in 1912 for L. Lilley Ltd, leather merchants and manufacturers of uppers, leggings and gaiters and replaced their East End factory.
