Full Description
{1} Unusual star-shaped pond at SP84108646. Farmer reported digging up large pieces of limestone from the extreme west side of the pond, possibly too substantial to have been merely to aid access to the pond for cattle. The pond, approximately 38m x 30m x 1m deep, has four projections roughly to the north, south, east and west. Slight depressions suggest that the west and south projections may have extended a further 5-10m at some time. A concentration of limestone was noted at the extreme west end of the western projection, and smaller more scattered limestone also within the northern projection. Both north and south projections adjoined a north-south orientated ditch or former stream. The character and location of the pond was such to suggest its former use as a four-piped duck-decoy pond.
