Full Description

{1} A property with extensive gardens and orchards, known as The Lodge, and subsequently Rose Villa, was established during the C19th, later to be demolished to make way for a home for the elderly which in turn was demolished in 1991. Trial trench excavation was undertaken in the former gardens prior to development. Within Trench 3 layers containing C19th pottery, charcoal etc could relate to the C19th gardens or orchards. Also within Trench 5 a series of narrow furrows, abundant root activity and sherds of Willow Pattern pottery and ceramic pipe remains suggest C19th garden activity presumably relating to Rose Villa. About 5m from the eastern end of Trench 1 was a north-south running linear feature containing a large quantity of C19th pottery. This seems to have acted as drainage for the villa. A brick culvert with an arched roof, probably dating to the mid-C19th, was revealed within an irregular linear feature. The bricks measured approximately 300mm in length x 100mm in width, varying slightly in size, and were possibly handmade.
