Full Description
{1} Area 1. Two sub-circular pits of c.1.0m diameter x 0.15m depth. They produced two sherds of C12th-C13th pottery and three fragments of animal bone.
In addition two postholes were revealed to the east of the pits and a shallow gully to the north-west. None of these features contained dating evidence, but are thought to be of medieval date.
The eastern end of the excavation partly exposed the edge of a large quarry pit c.0.45m deep. Pottery dating to the late C12th to early C13th was recovered from its fill, along with animal bone. The northern edge of the quarry was cut by a small pit or large posthole containing C12th-C13th pottery and animal bone.
All medieval contexts were sealed by a layer which included topsoil, building rubble and landscaping debris.
Later features included a square brick-lined soakaway close to the northern edge of Area 1. To its east a 1.15m wide ditch was identified, backfilled with rubble, tile and brick fragments. Finally a shallow stone footing was revealed, this was noted as being on the same alignment as the west wall of the C19th property immediately north of the area.
