Full Description

{1} The streets on the east side of the survey area display great variety in the houses forming the terraces. Victoria Road has two and three storey houses, some plain, some with ornate pilasters and keystones above doorways and windows, whilst of the ten nearest Billing Road on the east side, each is significantly different from its neighbours. Palmerston Road and Vernon Street and Terrace also display pleasing variations.

{2} 20-24 Palmerston Road. Brick built group of buildings behind unremarkable terrace. Misaligned and unusually scaled doorway (photo 2) and carriage entrance hint at something unusual. Beyond the carriage arch there are a series of buildings and extensions to the houses indicating the existence of a business complex. The large windows suggest that it may have been artisans workshops possibly for show making but a quick check of the directories suggests continuous use as a builders yard. The complex is now subdivided between two/ three ownerships and only a part was accessible for photographic recording.

{4} 43 & 45 Victoria Road. Three storey dwellings. Fire division wall rises above roof between the two houses. Decorative moulded brick courses at first and second floor level. Shoe scrapers in walls alongside doors consist of cast iron bar with decorated ends, across recessed stone let into brickwork.
58 Victoria Road. Shoe scraper
60 Victoria Road. Fire division walls
