Full Description
{1} Trial trenching identified pits and ditches in the northern part of the study area. However no dating evidence was obtained for any of these features. The pits, four of which contained evidence for burning appeared to be limited to a small area.
{2} Several features were observed in Trench 11.
A ditch 1.8m wide x 0.31m deep. This was picked up in the desk-based assessment as a 50m long linear feature. Its function is uncertain, but given its length it could form part of a field boundary.
A pit 1.7m x 0.5m x 0.36m deep (from which samples were taken for c14 dating. Also a similar pit 1.0m x 0.95m x 0.35m deep. These may have had an industrial or domestic derivation.
Several small pits were also apparent, 0.1m, 0.15m and 0.16m deep respectively. They were thought to be the result of root action, along with two larger pits.
A possible posthole 0.5m x 0.35m, with steep sides and a flat base.
