Please read our .

Summary

A small number of tree throws were identified during a watching brief at Latimer Park in 2004. No dating evidence was found, but it is possible that they are associated with the same episode of forest clearance seen in excavations of 1999 to the east.

Full Description

{1} Five treethrows were excavated at SP 89353 75713. Mostly semi-circular in plan, no dating evidence was retrieved from these features. The fills occasionally contained patches of burning, but these were not secure enough for carbon dating. It is however possible that they are associated with the same episode of forest clearance seen in excavations of 1999, dated to the late Mesolithic/early Neolithic period.

{2} A recent excavation at Burton Latimer has produced ephemeral evidence of possible anthropogenic forest clearance with a single radiocarbon date of 5910 ± 40 yr BP (4904-4714 cal BC).
