Full Description

{1} Archaeological excavation of test pits was undertaken at 6-7 The Drapery. In test pit D, at the eastern end of the site, a substantial foundation, comprising bricks laid over limestone, was identified. The major wall foundation represents a major east-west structural property division, almost certainly the division between Nos 6 and 7 The Drapery. Evidence of a probable brick yard surface and a flimsy stone east-west aligned wall was also recorded; probably representing a non-structural wall foundation. The test pits and subsequent augering did not extend below 1.5m and no features earlier than the post-medieval period were encountered, although it is possible that earlier features survive below this level.
