Summary
An Anchorite cell was recorded at the entrance of the friary. There are several references in the early 16th century and at the surrender of the monastery in 1538 an Anchorite is specifically named.

Full Description
{1} The Anchorite cell at entrance of monastery found great favour with population & various bequethals to its priest are recorded; Anchorite Robert Barrett was one of signatories of Act of Surrender;
{2} Mention of Anchorite presence in friary; legacies left to Anchor between 1510 & 1532; implies that there was one or more of them in friary; at surrender in 1538 Anchorite Robert Barrett was one of those signing deed;
{3} Austin Friary surrendered 28th October 1538 & list of names signing deed includes Robert Barrett who describes himself as Anchorite; probably same "good father Anker" mentioned in 1522 will of John Greene;
{4} Deed of Surrender signed by prior & sub-prior & Anchorite Robert Barrett;
