Full Description
{1} 367 Romano-British pot sherds found in 1.25 acres, pot sherds predominatly middle Roman, but both earlier and later material also present. No evidence of villa claimed by RCHME.
{2} Nether Close, Site 28. 367 sherds from a concentration covering c.1.25ha. The pottery included continental colour coated ware. Of the assemblage 16% represents the early Roman period, 69% the middle Roman period and 15% the late Roman period.
Metal detecting supports the view that abandonment was not total in the late Roman period, with the recovery of mid to late Roman coinage. 15 were recovered, the dating (AD 96-378) presented in Table 4.27.
A dense concentration of Roman pottery and limestone rubble some 1.25ha in extent was located by the upper reaches of the Stanwick Brook. The predominant pottery from the site is middle Roman but both early and later material is also present. The main fabrics represented were grey wares (49%), with a significant quantity of shelly ware (21%) and noticable amounts of colour coated wares (15%). There was a small amount of grogged ware (8%). This suggests continuous occupation of a mixed character, the most intensive possibly being in the middle Roman period. Four coins of the house of Valentinian were recovered suggesting that activity continued into the late C4th.
