Full Description
{2} Sketch map showing extent with dates p.176. In 1950-51 the main rail line was extended via a cutting and concrete bridge under the Gretton road, and the lengthy face of Brookfield Cottage quarry was opened up, with lorry operation in the initial stages. Brookfield Cottage had a very long and slightly curved face that eventually came very close to Kirby Hall. From the middle 196os the big excavation machines increasingly dominated, those utilising these stayed open until the very end. Brookfield Cottage had its machinery throughout. The quarry had two locomotives. Each loaded train left as one unit, with a leading loco and a banker. Dismantling took longer at the very big quarries, especially at Brookfield Cottage. The quarry faces were graded to a slope acceptable to agriculture and the railway cuttings were filled in. By 1982 only the dragline was left, this (a Bucyrus-Erie) was sold to American interests in Pennsylvania.
