1528 Mills and meadow land in Cransley granted by the College of St Mary, Leicester to Thomas Barnwell of Cransley for 51 years at a rent of 34s
1549 Newark Manor with a water-mill and a horse-mill, granted to John Hasylwood of Maidwell
1598 Referred to as Newark Mill in the marriage settlement of Alice Robinson
1810 Described as a 'small water-mill' in an advertisement for a journeyman miller to work there
1910 Cast iron great spur wheel fitted by Groome of Eastcote
1960s Last of the machinery cleared out of the mill. The vertical shaft (reputed to be 130 years old) and the 1910 great spur wheel were transferred to Billing Mill Museum of Milling to be displayed outside.
Site visited 30/07/2001, now cleared. No upstanding mill buildings could be seen and extensive vegetation prevented inspection of any ground level remains, if any, or the watercourses. Below ground remains of the mill may survive.
In 1350 there is reference to a mill at Cransley. In 1528 the mills and meadow land at Cransley were granted by the College of St Mary, Leicester to Thomas Barnwell of Cransley for 51 years at a rent of 34s. In 1549 Newark Manor, with a watermill and horse mill were granted to John Hasylwood of Maidwell. In 1598 the mill is referred to as Newark Mill in the marriage settlement of Alice Robinson. It was described as a small watermill in 1810, and in 1910 a cast iron great spur wheel was fitted by Groome of Eastcote. In the 1960s the last of the machinery was cleared out of the mill. The vertical shaft and the great spur wheel of 1910 were transferred to Billing Mill Museum for display outside.
