Full Description
{1} Fieldwalking has revealed approximately 700 pieces of Roman pottery, concentrated within an area of about 30m.sq. in North Lake Field, Wappenham. Three test pits were dug, two within the centre of the concentration area and one on the edge. The latter produced a solitary sherd of greyware whilst the former produced 198 pieces of Roman pottery, Roman nails, glass and a coin.
Sherds of Roman pottery were found in August-September 2008 during field-walking along the footpath running from Pittams Lane, Wappenham [incorrect ngrs given]. As a result more extensive walking was undertaken in the field, which suggested a concentration towards the top of the field with possibly a second towards Pittams Lane. At the first location large amounts of pottery were accompanied by 20+ pieces of limestone, possibly from a building.
The pottery collected from fieldwalking included fine and coarse wares, notably Samian, Nene Valley colour coated, Oxfordshire mortaria, shell-tempered ware and soft pink grog. The vessel types ranged from fine, small beakers to the rims of substantial storage jars. (No medieval pottery was recovered, a little later material.)
Along with the pottery were three coins, a tegula and possibly two other Roman roof tiles and a floor tile. A few bones and indeterminate metal artefacts were found.
