Full Description
{2} Romano-British pottery recovered from an area of cropmarks in the north-east part of the site; particularly concentrated around the central dividing ditch and two northern enclosures. The majority of activity took place in C1st and C2nd.
{3} A light scatter of Iron Age and Roman pottery; only a single sherd coincides with the enclosure therefore dating of this structure is uncertain.
Romano-British pottery concentration overlying cropmarks; early, middle and late Roman pottery found with particularly high concentrations from the middle Roman period. Analysis of the pottery types indicates that settlement was domestic but not particularly high in status. Late Roman pottery occurs in a more restricted area suggesting a later reduction in settlement area.
{4} No Iron Age pottery was recovered from either of the cropmarks or the surrounding area. Roman pottery forms two concentrations about 392m apart, suggesting the presence of two distinct areas of settlement. The intervening area is largely barren, while the slopes of the gentle ridge on which the settlement is constructed have a light but even scatter of pottery suggesting manuring. Both the concentrations and surrounding scatters contain early Roman pottery but there is a marked decline in later material from Debdale, suggesting that settlement concentrated in the south. More detailed descriptions of pottery scatters given.
