Full Description

{1} In both trenches 1 and 3 the original soil appears to have been removed near the tail of the rampart and the subsequent hollows filled with silt. It is possible that the soil from the hollows was used in the construction of an early earthern bank, which was flattened and sealed beneath the later defences. There is no secure dating evidence for thi possible bank, but sherds dating to the mid 2nd century were recovered.
