Full Description

{1} The stone foundation of a wall, aligned north - south, 6.9m long by 1.2m wide by 0.45m high. The masonry consisted of blocks of limestone and Northamptonshire Sand with ironstone. The block sizes varied considerably, most were crudely shaped and the coursing was irregular. The blocks had been laid dry but interlocked so that no use of rubble fill was necessary. Pottery beneath the wall and the motte above it date the wall to the late 11th century. This date is too late for it to have been part of the Saxon defences and it seems probable that the wall is a fragment of an early norman stone building, possibly a manorial building, buried beneath the motte.
